I donate time and energy to help local arts organizations where I can. Through the years, I've come to believe in donating workshops rather than works of art. In today's climate, most of the donated artworks rarely bring what they are worth, and it seems to be disrespectful to me. What I do now is supply a statement with a work of art in a show that states "100% of the proceeds from the sale of this piece will be donated to benefit xxxxx organization". This way, the piece will sell for a respectable amount AND I can now write off my cash donation.
Another way I donate is to offer some hands-on workshops. I love turning people on to other art forms....providing a rich environment and fostering a fearless approach to creating works. For this year's "Primavera", the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County's annual fundraiser, I've donated 2 of these workshops: A chair collage day (for 2), and an altar construction / collage day (for 2).
