A friend recently told me about a painting challenge: do a painting a day. This last spring, May into June, 2007, I took this challenge and went out sketching each day, working on local landscapes in Bonnydoon, located north of Santa Cruz, in the Santa Cruz Mountains above the ocean and the north beaches. One of my favorite hiking trails goes through what seemed to be an old dry lake bed. 20 years ago, this area was torn up by dirt bikes, off road motorcycles and buggies, using the space as a race track. The area was incorporated into a local land preserve, and in the last 10 years we've seen remarkable recovery: this area is now studded with healthy Ponderosa Pines, lots of lupin, both field lupin and bush lupin, and a myriad of other plants. This spring the area sported a blazing blue carpet of lupin. YUM! Enjoy!
