Most
of
my
larger
black
and
white
figurative
images
are
created
using
either
black
oil
pastel
or
graphite
coupled
with
the
use
of
turpenoid.

I
typically
use
oil
pastel
and
turpenoid
for
longer
poses,
from
five
to
20
minutes
in
length.
The
resulting
image
usually
contains
a
richness
of
dark
texture
imparted
by
scrubbing
the
pastel
image
with
a
turpenoid-soaked
brush.
A
rather
heavy
stock
of
Bristol
Board
is
my
favorite
surface
for
this
kind
of
image;
it
is
quite
hard
and
smooth,
and
will
allow
you
to
repeatedly
scrub
the
surface.
When
enough
pigment
is
applied,
the
wet
brush
glides
freely
on
the
image.
I
wind
up
both
drawing
and
painting
on
the
same
surface,
often
using
one
hand
to
draw,
and
the
other
to
paint.
In
creating
these
images,
one
has
to
be
very
careful
about
evaluating
and
leaving
white
(untouched)
space
behind:
once
the
pastel
or
brush
is
laid
to
paper,
the
white
paper
surface
cannot
be
regained.
A
number
of
these
longer
poses
have
been
used
as
the
basis
for
many
of
my
computer-drawn
digital
images.
